Follow the Golden Gate Bridge, North from San Francisco to beautiful Marin County!

No other county has as many riches to explore as Marin County. Located across the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco, it is home to more protected land than any other city in the USA.  In Marin, one can access large open space areas via the National, State and County Parks, including the Golden Gate National Recreation area.  When one decides to leave San Francisco, to visit Marin County, one reaches paradise.

Visit Marin and enjoy Marin Headlands, Point Reyes National Seashore, Muir Woods National Monument, Mount Tamalpais State Recreation area, Olompali State Park and China Camp State Park - just to name a few.

 

The paradise of Marin goes much further than it’s beautiful natural places, such as Muir Woods, it’s cliff edged coastlines, long beaches, and scenic San Francisco Bay shores.  Once one gets over it’s cabin-like million dollar homes, car show like streets, one realizes what Marin offers; a casual atmosphere and tolerance of all types, that make this place unique.

  • Bolinas Ridge (pictured above): Gorgeous views of the Pacific Ocean, out toward Sinson and West Marin.
    • This is the perfect location to watch sunset or tie the not! In the summer the fog sits beneath the ridge, like an ocean wave, silently moving below your feet while the sunset glows in front of you. Amazing; it is something the soul does not soon forget!
  • Marin Headlands: Unbelievable views of San Francisco, Golden Gate Bridge, and the bay. Post Card perfect!

 

Mt
Tamalpais State Recreation Area: Besides numerous hiking trails and
plenty of camping sites, it is the best place to enjoy some Marin
County views.

  • Top of Mt. Tamalpais, East Peak (3rd picture from top): Fantastic Panoramic Views of the whole Bay area, including the magnificent Pacific Ocean!
  • Tiburon and Sausalito: Walk the Main Street of either one of these towns and get ready for the view of a lifetime!
  • Angel Island:
    Grab the Ferry from Tiburon and bring your bike! This island is
    recreational, vista paradise! Enjoy numerous Ayala Cove’s sandy beach,
    picturesque boats, and a great Café.

Marin Beaches:

Enjoy Stinson Beach, Cronkite, Muir Beach and Pt Reyes National Seashore. Marin has a couple great Nude beaches, such as Red Rock Beach, for those that like to be one with the elements.

  • Bay Area Discovery Museum:
    An indoor/outdoor family museaum that offers numerous activities for
    children 8 & younger that explore hands-on art & science in a
    fun, educational style. The views are fantastic of the city and the
    Golden Gate Bridge.
  • Muir Woods:
    A national monument, celebrating the beauty of the magnificent Old
    Growth Redwoods in honor of John Muir, a man who fought hard to save
    some of America’s national treasures, such as Yosemite. Redwood Trees
    can be as old as 2500 yrs, and the average lifespan is 500 yrs old!

 

Marin’s Local Attractions (non-commercial): Mingle with the locals by enjoying these natural, local attractions.

  • Old Mill Park: An historic sawmill that has been
    restored. This is a great park, located next to downtown Mill Valley,
    and is very picturesque. Wander in the beautiful Redwood Groves and
    truly feel the magic of Marin!
  • Cascade Canyon: Incorporates 500 acres of some of the most pristine habitat in the Corte Madera Creek watershed.
  • Blackie’s Pasture: Definitely one of the best
    bike/walking paths in the world! The views can’t be beat and there is
    plenty to do for the family such as kids parks, soccer field, and the
    beautiful bay to entertain your senses. Feast your eyes from this
    shoreline pathway with views of San Francisco, its bridges and the bay.
    Look the other direction and see marin’s famous backdrop, Mt Tamalpais,
    behind you. This path will take you all the way to Tiburon’s Main
    Street which is filled with shops and places to eat.
  • Madrone Canyon: A fantastic park that is perfect for
    those hot sunny days when you need to get to the shade. Beautiful
    Redwood trees abound, some even sit in the middle of the street. A
    great sight for locals and tourists that can’t get all the way to Muir
    Woods National Monument.
  • Lake Lagunitas: A very scenic lake that sits at the
    base of Mt. Tam. Beautiful hiking and biking trails, all very
    accessible with an grades for all types. This is a great place to do
    birdwatching, and spotting wildlife.

 

Marin’s, Non-profit, learning Attractions:

  • Marine Mammal Center:
    Located along the beachside of Cronkite / Rodeo Beach in Marin. This
    facilities function is to rescue and rehabilitate ocean species for
    release into the wild when able, if possible. Examples of ocean animals
    rescued along the Pacific Coast of the western U.S. and rehabilitated
    at the center include the California Sea Lion, Northern Elephant Seal,
    the Pacific Harbor Seal, dolphins, stranded Whales, and Sea Otters.
  • Audobon Canyon Ranch: preserves, protects & manages properties as sanctuaries for native plants and animals.
  • Bolinas Preserve Lagoon:
    A 1,000 acre wildlife preserve that supports a major heronry of Great
    Blue Herons and Snowy Egrets. The egrets and herons nesting at Bolinas
    Lagoon Preserve are a main attraction of this preserve, but you can
    also find black-tail deer, bobcat, badger, gray fox, raccoon, brush
    rabbit, meadow mouse, etc. There are also numerous landbirds, reptiles,
    and amphibians. The Preserve's frontage along Bolinas Lagoon brings
    more than 60 species of water and shore birds into view - from
    sandpipers to osprey to pelicans - as well as some of the resident
    harbor seals.
  • Bouverie Preserve:
    Amazing display of spring wildflowers at this preserve. It is a 500acre
    preserve that is home to a rich and distinct population of plants and
    animals. There are over 130 species of birds, 350 species of flowering
    plants, and many animals such as the bobcat, grey fox, and coyote.
  • Wildcare:
    A truly urban wildlife rehabilitation center, located near downtown San
    Rafael—Marin’s largest city. WildCare’s mission: “to advocate wildlife
    for a sustainable world, through nature education, wildlife
    rehabilitation and community outreach”.
    • If find a wild animal that is in need of help, take it at Wildcare!
    • Visit Wildcare to learn about animals in the area and to visit
      those animals that could not be set out in the wild again. Each day at
      around 12pm, visit and watch the animals get fed. A great activity with
      kids!
